Five minutes from the Bay Bridge, one encounters an unassuming intersection on Route 50 with Carmichael Road. The road doesn’t initially seem to offer anything unusual, just another ride on a quiet country lane. Very quickly though it becomes apparent that this is a special area. First the Hunters Oak golf course comes into view, followed by the broad classic fields of lovely Eastern Shore farms, with their horizons and views that seem to go forever. After several miles of this very relaxing landscape, the signs for the Aspen Institute’s Wye River Campus begin appearing.
The Aspen Institute is an organization dedicated to "fostering enlightened leadership, the appreciation of timeless ideas and values, and open-minded dialogue on contemporary issues" in politics and foreign affairs. Helicopters regularly ferry foreign dignitaries and the top officials in Washington in and out for seminars and conferences. It’s specifically famous for the Wye River Memorandum, a treaty that was generated between Israel and Palestine at the Institute.
One quarter mile past the first of the Institute’s facilities you’ll find the charming entrance to the historic Wye Plantation, the home of William Paca, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Turning down the driveway you’ll quickly come to the Houghton House, another of the Aspen Institute’s facilities.
Following the driveway to its end, you’ll finally arrive at a gorgeous newly constructed home that sits on 15 acres at a soft bend of the Wye River. This is a much more of an estate than a simple home, with large rooms perfectly laid out for socializing and smaller, comfortably cozy spaces for quiet times with the family. The architectural detail is phenomenal, and every element of its construction is first class.
The many windows in the house look out onto the peacefully rolling fields that surround it, and the view of the Wye River—that leads directly into the Chesapeake Bay—from the formidable upper deck in the back is just beautiful. The deck overlooks a broad patio with a pool, a perfect place to host a party of virtually any size. A short stroll leads to the dock with a lift where you can keep your boat at the ready for trips into the Chesapeake.
The full range of Chesapeake Bay activities is at your fingertips with this stunning home—hunting, boating, equestrian, fishing, golfing or simply enjoying nature. Annapolis is just over the Bridge, and the proximity to the Aspen Institute imbues the estate with an air of exclusivity. If your goal is to create the sense of a manor home where a lord and his lady can live and entertain with graciousness and also relax to the rhythms of nature and life on the Eastern Shore, then it is imperative that you take a look at this spectacular home.
